I found this at AC Moore and picked up a few skeins for a project. Even though I’m not a fan of the worsted weight version of this yarn, there aren’t many options for lightweight yarn in the wild, especially not in solid colors at a lower price point. The yarn performed at pretty much the same rate as the worsted weight version but it was much softer.

Aesthetics

This yarn is very loosely spun and very soft. In my experience with it, it didn’t hold a shape very well. I was using it to make dragon scale gloves and the “scales” in this material were too soft and ended up almost formless. I worry that if using this for socks or something, they won’t be strong enough to stand up and slide into your shoe while you’re walking. When I triple-plyed it for another project, it looked much better. It is very soft and it comes in a few nice colors, however, there are only 14 colors available meaning this has limited appeal.

Difficulty

I found this yarn easy to work with. There was no splitting or any issues with it sliding from the needles or the hook. It held up really well to multiple uses (I took my originally gloves apart and used the yarn in other projects).

Final Thoughts

This yarn is very soft and easy to work but it doesn’t have the strength to hold up to more structured work. It does better than the worsted version of this yarn but there are much better light weight yarns on the market.

Review

I noticed this yarn in Joanne’s while running in for something else. Like Red Heart, Nicole, Bernat, and other acrylic yarns, this brand comes in a variety of sizes and types. I’ll be reviewing them individually so that they can be compared to similar brands. The Premium version of this brand comes in a variety of colors and has a nice feel to it.

Aesthetics

This yarn feels sort of like felted wool, very similar to Bernat but a little softer. Although the website says it’s “super soft” I wouldn’t exactly say that. I would say that it is a comfortable yarn. The colors are very varied and bright. Their variegated options are also unusual and a little more modern than other brands.

Difficulty

This yarn is extremely easy to knit. Because of the way it’s twisted, it doesn’t split so you’re able to knit fairly quickly with this yarn. There were no weird spots, color issues, knots or tangles in this. It was a smooth and easy yarn to work with.

Final Thoughts

This yarn was very easy to work with and had a nice variety of colors suitable for many types of projects. It is soft but it is also sturdy so you can use it for garments or even household items. A fun, solid yarn all around.

I purchased a quite a bit of this yarn for a project as a low cost alternative to Simply Soft. This is a very soft and very bright yarn that is a good choice for colorful and snuggly projects but isn’t very sturdy which makes it largely unsuitable for anything that will get very heavy use.

Aesthetics

This yarn is bright and very soft. The colors really pop and the yarn itself has quite a bit of shine making it a very nice option for fun projects. The softness makes it an easy option to work with and the knit is smooth and easy.

There are a variety of colors available from candy colors to more subtle earthy shades. There are a few variegated options available but most of the colorways are solid letting you design your own look.

It is not tightly wound so it does tend towards a looser, fluffier stitch, there also can be a bit of flurry threads like the type you find with roving yarn

Difficulty

This yarn knit up fairly quickly but given that it is a soft yarn, it does split very easily however, the imperfections caused by this are easily hidden by just tugging on the work a bit.

Though the yarn was not hard to work with, there were a few knots in the yarn itself. I also tried this yarn on a rigid heddle and it did not make for a great choice. It is a bit too soft and loose for the loom.

Final Thoughts

Bernat Satin is a very pretty and soft yarn. It creates a nice solid fabric despite its softness and makes a nice addition to a stash. I wouldn’t recommend it for anything that would see a lot of hard wear and tear due to how easy it is to snag but this is a nice yarn for garments.

Review

Joylve is a fingering weight yarn that can be found through many discount online retailers (I purchased mine through Amazon). It is a light weight yarn that comes in a variety of bright colors making it ideal for baby items. It is also very low priced, likely because it’s shipped from China. Despite how shady it may seem, this yarn turned out to be a solid purchase.

Aesthetics

Joylve is a fingering weight, cashmere yarn, according to the website. As I mentioned before, this did come from a Chinese retailer so the actual label is all in Chinese. Either way, this yarn is super soft and feels wonderful to work with. I was blown away with how nicely this worked up.

I did a few small testers in crochet, knitting, and Tunisian crochet and each option gave the yarn a different feel. Knitting created a light weight, smooth piece. Crochet, a very soft, almost bouncy piece of fabric. Tunisian style left me with a sturdy and heavier piece. Across all three styles, the yarn kept its bright colors and softness.

The packaging was dirty from travel but the yarn itself was clean, there were no weird chemical smells or anything of that nature, however, I would still suggest washing whatever you make with this before use.

Difficulty

This yarn was very smooth to work with. I did not encounter any tangles, weak spots, or knots of any kind. The only issue with it really is that it does split a bit when working but it is not as “slippery” as the sheen of it would have you think.

The splitting issue is more of a problem with crochet than knitting but once you start working on the piece it seems to get better.

Final Thoughts

This is a really great yarn for a really low price. We can’t really confirm if it is actually cashmere blend but it does feel very nice and holds up very well in various types of yarn craft. The color selection is very nice and it’s sturdy enough for even a beginner to be able to work with.

*The yardage is a guestimate. It is not listed on the website so we calculated it from the grams (50g) to get an approximate idea. If you do decide to use this yarn, it might be best to buy a skein or two more than you think you’ll need.

Envelope Slippers – Free Beginner Tunisian Crochet Pattern

Envelope Slippers

My husband wanted a pair of slippers. He always wants a pair of slippers. I made him some knit ones but they met a tragic end (he stepped in dog poop) and he was jealous of a how warm the Tunisian crochet pairs I had made for my daughters were.

The pattern for them was pretty feminine and really not his style so I designed a pair of slippers using Tunisian crochet that were a bit more gender neutral. The instructions are totally free and they make a great first Tunsian Crochet project.

If you don’t know how to do this style of yarncraft, you can check out my Skillshare class on it.

The pattern is as follows and is available on Ravelry (if you got here from there, hi!) .

Envelope Slippers

These are easy to make Tunisian Crochet slippers that can be made to fit any size foot.

Materials:

Yarn – any yarn will do but remember, this style of crochet makes a heavy “fabric” so even worsted weight yarn will make really warm slippers. The slippers in the picture were made with Lions Brand Amazing.

Hook – your hook just needs to be the right size for your yarn. This is a small project so you can use a normal crochet hook with a rubber band on the back to hold your stitches. My slippers were made with a size J crochet hook.

Instructions (Make 2) :

1. Chain enough stitches to go across the top of foot and down the side. I wear a size 8.5 (US) shoe so this was 15 stitches for my foot. Proceed to create the Foundation Row (FR).

2. Continue in Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) until the length of your piece measures the length of your foot + ½. For me, this measurement was 9+4.5=13.5.

I made my slippers just a little smaller, 13 inches so that they would fit a bit snugger.

3. Bind Off (BO) until there are a little more than a 3rd of the stitches left. For my slipper this was six.

4. Work these stitches in TSS until you have a length that is enough to wrap all the way around the slipper to connect back to the front. For me, this was about 16 inches.

5. BO last stitches.

Finishing

To assemble your slippers, all you need to do is stitch along the seam and attach the “tail” the top of the slipper. You can either turn it inside out and stitch it on the inside for a rounder finish or stich along the outside for a boxier look.

Yardage: 224*

Final Verdict: 4/5
Aesthetics: 3.5/5
Difficulty: 4.5/5

Review

Premier Dream is an inexpensive acrylic yarn that is both soft and sturdy. I picked this up to do a tapestry because I liked the shade of pink but it works very well for traditional knitting and crochet projects. It is a stellar basic yarn choice and the low price makes it perfect for completing a larger project. It was also very easy to work with.

Aesthetics

I picked up a few shades of this yarn. The color options were bright and attractive, however, there are few color options available. There are 17 total colors but five of them are stripes and a handful of them are just different shades of the same. Of the colors they do have, they are available in your basics, black, white, red, yellow, green etc.

Once worked with, the yarn holds its brightness, it does not pill and generally looks attractive. It is also very soft without becoming weak and prone to tangles. It would make great blankets and items that sit on the skin.

20160509_155108

It lost points because despite its hardiness, there is no “luxury” to this yarn. It’s inexpensive and looks it. This yarn is great for fun projects, children’s wear, funky hats, home goods, etc but it won’t look as nice in certain garments.

Difficulty

This yarn is very soft so I expected it to split and have issues with unraveling. I was VERY surprised to find that it was well made and easy to work with. I did not run into any tangles or weak spots in the yarn. This yarn can be worked quickly with very few mistakes.

A really solid beginner’s yarn.

Final Thoughts

Premier Dream isn’t a spectacular yarn but it is a very good yarn. It works up well and is a great option for larger projects, testing new techniques, clothing that will be seeing a lot of wear but still need to be comfy. All in all, it’s a nice solid yarn choice.

*The yardage on the package is listed as 224 yards but the website says 190. This MIGHT be because of a difference between the variegated version and the solid color. A few companies sell smaller skeins of variegated yarns but list them with solids. Just an FYI.

Review

Country is a free phone app to help you count your stitches, rounds, or rows. It is very basic and super easy to use.

Aesthetics

This app is VERY simple. It only has one counter so I use it primarily for quick, small projects or projects that have repeats in rows in conjunction with another counter. The counter itself is a black background with colored numbers. Simple.

Also, even in the free version (which is what I’m reviewing here) there are no ads.

Difficulty

Super simple to use. Just tap to count. If you access the menu, you can decrease your count or reset it completely. It only stores one count at a time but you can add repeats to it.

Final Thoughts

This is a nice, easy counter to have on your phone. It’s a simple app that really gets the job done. There is a paid version with more features but for people who just need a quick handy counter, this is enough.
